Lung cancer is a disease characterized by the out-of-control growth of cells in a person’s lung or lungs. It is the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. and it is most often caused by cigarette smoking. As smoking rates across the nation are declining, so are lung cancer rates. Among non-smokers, exposure to radon is the number one cause of lung cancer. Other factors that add to the risk of developing lung cancer include pipe and cigar smoking, family history and exposure to asbestos.
